The NFL season starts on Thursday night and we begin giving you this week’s best Week 1 plays and futures picks with our top 3 plays coming on Friday, one of them being the Giants or the Jets game. Every day on NY Betting News, we will break down at least one game for the upcoming week, and on Sundays we will provide the best player prop bets for the day. Here are the suggested plays for Week 1 and the upcoming season using the latest odds from FanDuel Sportsbook and DraftKings Sportsbook:
Baltimore Ravens at Miami Dolphins 1st Half Under 19.5
FanDuel Sportsbook Odds: 1H Under 19.5 (-115)
DraftKings Sportsbook Odds: 1H Under 19.5 (-115)
The Baltimore Ravens will travel to steamy Miami to take on the Dolphins during Week 1 of the NFL season on Sunday. The Dolphins come in with a new makeover in a lot of areas, including head coach. Brian Flores, former Patriots defensive coordinator, takes over a team that has been gutted in my places, including quarterback. Thirty-six year old journeyman Ryan Fitzpatrick will lead the offense backed up by Josh Rosen, who was acquired in a trade from the Cardinals. The Dolphins also just traded pro bowl left tackle Laremy Tunsil and starting wide receiver Kenny Stills away to the Houston Texans for two first round draft picks and a second round pick. The Ravens, on the other hand, continue to re-tool their offense behind quarterback Lamar Jackson, acquiring Mark Ingram II and adding rookie wide receivers Marquis Brown and Miles Boykin and running back Justice Hill in the draft.
With so many new offensive changes being taken place on both teams, this has the makings of a slow start to the season. The Dolphins first team struggled mightily in their dress rehearsal against Jacksonville a couple weeks ago, and points will be hard to come by against a Ravens side which ranked No. 1 in defense in 2018. The Ravens are not the same team they were under Joe Flacco. They are now more run-heavy behind Jackson and will try to establish the ground game early against the Dolphins. The Florida heat can’t be ignored in this first half number. Both teams will want to try and wear down the other on the ground and try and speed up the game to give their defense more rest. This has the makings of a fast and low-scoring first half with both teams trying to break down the other. I like the under total in the first-half at 19.5.
Houston Texans OVER 8.5 Wins in 2019
FanDuel Sportsbook Odds: Texans OVER 8.5 wins (-137)
DraftKings Sportsbook Odds: Texans OVER 8.5 wins (-134)
On Sunday, I went into my breakdown of why I think this Texans team can win Super Bowl 54. Naturally, given an over/under win total of just 8.5, I am love with the over on this. The Texans won 11 games a year ago and have only gotten better in the offseason, adding pro bowler Laremy Tunsil to their offensive line and Kenny Stills to their star receiving corps. Another year for Deschaun Watson under center should only allow him to develop and improve upon his first two seasons. Andrew Luck’s retirement will help Houston in a race for the division title, as will their schedule which isn’t overly difficult. They do play the NFC North and AFC West, which offers up winnable opportunities with Tampa Bay, Denver, Oakland, and Carolina.
Injuries are my only concern here as the Texans have already lost Lamar Miller for the season and have struggled in past years when they’ve lost their starting quarterback. They don’t have much depth behind Watson. But you can’t back out of a pick because of fear for injuries. You have to make your play as if they will be there all 16 games, and I really love this Texans team this year. They ranked 12th in defense a year ago and I believe their offense will be near the top this year with J.J. Watt hanging on to the prime of his career. I like the over on the Texans winning 8.5 games.
Prediction: Texans 12-4 (AFC South Champs)
